Powered Up

Powered Up is LEGO's current system for electronic functions in building sets. Introduced in 2018 as the successor to Power Functions, the older system no longer in production.

How it works

  • Hub: a battery-powered unit acting as the brain (typically 6 AAA batteries or rechargeable)
  • Motors: small and large electric motors with various torques
  • Sensors: colour and distance sensors for reactive models
  • LEDs: for lighting effects
  • Control: via a physical remote or the free Powered Up app on your phone

Where you'll find it

  • Technic flagships: Bugatti Chiron, Lamborghini Sián, Volvo Wheel Loader
  • Trains: all modern LEGO trains since 2018
  • Star Wars: BB-8, Boost Droid Commander
  • Hidden Side (discontinued)

Compatible with Power Functions?

Not directly — different connectors and voltage. Third-party conversion cables exist, but LEGO doesn't officially support mixing the two systems.
