MOC and alt builds

MOC stands for My Own Creation: a LEGO model designed by a fan, not by LEGO itself. It can be anything — from a detailed spaceship replica to a true-to-scale model of your own house.

What is an alt build?

An alt build (alternative model) is a special type of MOC: a design made entirely from the bricks of an existing official set. No extra parts — you take apart your set, use the same bricks, and build something completely different. Sets marked "3 in 1" on the box (like LEGO Creator) include official alt builds; on top of that, thousands of fan-designed alt builds exist for popular sets.

Where do I get instructions?

The biggest collection lives on Rebrickable, where fan designers publish their MOC instructions. Some are free, others cost a small fee (typically €3–€10). You get a PDF much like an official building instruction, plus a parts list.

What to check before you start

  • Do I really have all the bricks? Some "alt builds" require extra parts not in the set — read the description carefully.
  • Skill level? A MOC can be easier or much harder than the original set.
  • Builder reviews: Rebrickable lets previous builders flag errors or unclear steps.

Where Lakea uses this

On every set page we show how many alt builds are known for that set, with a direct link to Rebrickable. Click an alt build to see the design, parts count and the designer's name. A great way to get more out of a single LEGO set.
