LEGO Ideas
LEGO Ideas is LEGO's crowdsourcing platform where fans submit their own designs. A fan designs a model, builds a prototype in actual LEGO, photographs it, and posts it on ideas.lego.com. Other fans vote.
The selection process
- Designer builds and posts the project
- Other fans vote — there's a year to hit the first milestone, then more time for later ones
- At 10,000 votes the project enters official LEGO review
- LEGO assesses feasibility (production cost, licensing, audience)
- Approved projects are professionally redesigned by a LEGO design team
- New set is sold under the "Ideas" line
Royalties
The original designer earns 1% of the set's net revenue, plus 10 free copies. For successful sets that can mean tens of thousands of euros.
