BURP and LURP
BURP stands for Big Ugly Rock Piece, and LURP for Little Ugly Rock Piece. These are pre-moulded rock elements — one single part representing entire mountain peaks or cliffs, rather than building rocky terrain from smaller bricks.
Why "Ugly"?
The term comes from the AFOL community and is mildly mocking. AFOLs love building, and BURPs skip the build phase: you get a "rock" as one plastic piece. For the creative fan that feels like a shortcut that diminishes the building experience. For LEGO it's efficient — a mountain in 1 piece saves 200+ smaller bricks and keeps the box affordable.
Notable examples
- Castle theme (1990s and 2000s) — castle walls with BURPs as mountain edge
- Adventurers theme — jungle rocks and caves
- Star Wars Hoth sets — ice cliff BURPs
- Lord of the Rings 9476 The Orc Forge — multiple BURPs
Counter-movement
Recent AFOL-targeted sets use BURPs less. Modulars, Icons and MOCs prefer piece-by-piece rock formations using SNOT techniques — more parts, prettier result, but pricier and longer to build.
