AFOL

AFOL stands for Adult Fan of LEGO. It's a community term, not an official LEGO title — anyone who feels at home with it can call themselves one.

A short history

The term emerged in the 1990s on online forums (rec.toys.lego), where adult LEGO fans found each other despite LEGO marketing almost exclusively to children at the time. Around 2000 LEGO started taking the AFOL audience seriously, partly thanks to Star Wars licensed sets explicitly aimed at adult collectors.

Today

The AFOL market is estimated at 25-30% of LEGO's global revenue — many large sets (UCS, modulars, Technic flagships, Icons themes) are primarily aimed at this group. Hence the "18+" age label on more boxes and the "Adults Welcome" marketing since 2020.

Sub-terms

  • TFOL: Teen Fan of LEGO (13-17)
  • KFOL: Kid Fan of LEGO (under 13)
  • FFOL: Female Fan of LEGO (gender-specific variant, sometimes used in community discussion)
