Making your own sails for a LEGO® ship

Sails for a LEGO® ship are hard to find on their own. They come with the set, they are cut to size, and once they are gone you are stuck.

The question comes up often. Somebody has a ship without sails and is looking for someone who has them or can make them. The loose-parts market does carry sails, but per set, and rarely in the size you need.

Making them yourself is the surest route

You can buy printer sheets that transfer onto fabric with an iron. Pick a fabric and cover it with one of those sheets, on top and underneath. Put a tea towel over it. Heat it through properly with the iron.

Your fabric now carries the same coating that real LEGO® sails have. Cut the sail to size only after ironing.

You can run those sheets through a printer first. That puts your design, crest or logo on the sail before it ever touches the fabric.

• An iron, a tea towel and a pair of scissors
